Nobody tells you this when you're starting out, but weather is the hardest thing to fake on set. Explosions get all the attention. Fire looks dramatic in behind-the-scenes reels. But making it rain convincingly over a two-block exterior at three in the morning—matching the downpour you shot yesterday—that's where the real craft lives.
Audiences don't notice good weather effects. They only notice bad ones. A rain scene where the drops aren't catching the light, or where the ground is bone dry two feet outside the frame—that pulls people out faster than a visible boom mic. The goal is invisible work. You want the viewer cold and wet in their seat, never thinking about the fifty thousand gallons we pumped through the rig.
MAKING IT RAIN
Rain bars are the backbone—long pipes with precision-drilled nozzles, mounted on stands or hung from crane arms above the set. The nozzle selection is everything. Full-cone nozzles produce a natural, scattered pattern that reads well on camera. Flat-fan nozzles give you a sheet effect, good for driving rain with a wind machine behind it. Pin-jet nozzles create individual heavy drops—the kind you'd use for a slow, moody drizzle where every drop needs to be visible against a backlight.
Water pressure matters more than people think. Too high and you get mist instead of rain. Too low and the drops are fat and uniform, which looks artificial. We typically run between 40 and 80 PSI depending on the nozzle type and the look the DP wants. Finding the sweet spot is half feel, half experience.
On See for Apple TV, we ran weather rigs outdoors in Ontario forests for weeks. The show lived in a perpetually overcast, damp world, so continuity was relentless. You can't just turn rain on and off between setups—the ground has to stay wet, wardrobe has to match, the puddle in the wide shot better still be there for the close-up two hours later. We had crew with garden hoses dressing the ground between takes. Glamorous work.
The trucks make it possible. Our Peterbilt and Ford water trucks hold thousands of gallons each, and on a big exterior you'll burn through water faster than you'd believe. A single rain bar running wide open pushes 40 to 60 gallons per minute. Multiply that by eight bars covering a street, and you're looking at serious volume. Running out mid-take isn't an option.
SNOW THAT ISN'T SNOW
Real snow is terrible on a film set. It melts under lights, it's inconsistent, and you can't art-direct it. So we fake it.
There are three main approaches. Paper snow—finely shredded biodegradable paper—is the workhorse for falling snow. It's light, catches the air naturally, and reads beautifully on camera. You run it through a snow machine, basically a large fan unit with a hopper that feeds paper into the airstream. Fan speed controls density. Slow fan, gentle flurries. Crank it up and you've got a blizzard.
For ground cover, snow blankets—rolls of synthetic material—lay down smooth and even. Foam snow is another option. Sprayed on, it gives you that fresh-powder look, but it doesn't hold up under foot traffic, so you're constantly re-dressing between takes. The newer biodegradable products have been a real improvement over the old plastic-based stuff. We've moved almost entirely to plant-based and cellulose materials. They decompose, they don't harm waterways, and honestly they look better on camera too.
The hardest part of snow isn't making it fall. It's keeping it consistent across twelve hours of shooting when the sun keeps shifting and the wind won't cooperate.
FOG, MIST, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
Fog and haze do more for a scene's feel than most people realize—they soften light, add depth, and give the camera something to photograph in the air between the lens and the subject.
We run glycol-based hazers for interior work—fine, even haze that hangs without dissipating too fast. Cracked-oil machines give you something thicker, great for shafts of light through windows. For exterior fog, high-output machines blanket large areas quickly, often combined with chillers that cool the fog so it hugs the ground instead of rising. That low-lying creeping effect? Not magic. It's a fog machine pumping through a tube packed with ice, and it takes constant attention to keep it right.
Wind machines are the other half of any weather rig. A rain scene without wind looks like someone left a sprinkler on. We use everything from small electric fans for close-up work to massive Ritter fans that simulate gale-force conditions. On Reacher, we'd stack wind and rain together for outdoor action scenes—the combination sells the hostility of the environment, and it's a big part of why the practical-plus-VFX approach works so well. Actors end up cold, wet, and miserable, which honestly helps their performance.
CONTINUITY IS THE REAL BATTLE
Here's what separates a good weather team from a mediocre one: continuity. Film shoots out of order. The scene where someone walks into the rainstorm might be shot three weeks after the scene where they're already soaked. Your rain has to match—same intensity, same angle, same wetness on the ground and wardrobe. We document everything. PSI readings, nozzle positions, fan speeds, ground wet patterns. When we come back to match a shot weeks later, we're rebuilding from data, not memory.
The other thing nobody talks about is drainage. Hundreds of gallons onto a set and it has to go somewhere. Interior stages need drain management or you'll flood the building. Exteriors need to account for runoff, especially in Toronto where you're shooting near storm drains that feed the lake. We plan water management before a single drop hits the ground.
After twenty-plus years at Dynamic Effects Collective—from Pompeii's ash storms to the controlled chaos on The Boys to the forest weather systems on See—the thing I keep coming back to is that practical weather effects are fundamentally about discipline. Anyone can make it rain. Making it rain the same way, in the same spot, at the same intensity, sixty-three takes in a row across a four-day shoot—that's the job. And when it's done right, you never think about it. You just feel wet.
