Practical Effects vs. CGI: Why Top Productions Still Choose Real SFX

There's a moment on set — right after a controlled pyro gag fires exactly on cue, the light hits the smoke perfectly, and the camera captures every detail in a single take — where you remember why this craft matters. The best VFX artists in the world will tell you the same thing: give them real fire, real smoke, and real light interaction to start with, and they'll make it look incredible. Practical effects and digital effects aren't competing. They're building on each other.

We've been running practical special effects out of our shop in Toronto for over a decade, and every year someone floats the same prediction: practical effects are dying, everything's going digital. Every year, our phone keeps ringing. The productions keep getting bigger. And the reason isn't that we're replacing VFX departments — it's that we're making their jobs easier.

Giving VFX the Best Starting Point

When a director has something real happening on set, every department benefits. The DP lights off actual fire and smoke instead of guessing what the VFX team will add later. The actors have real environmental cues to work with — wind, rain, heat from a fire bar, debris falling around them. Everything is controlled, everything is planned, and the performances are grounded because the world around them is real.

We saw this constantly on The Boys. That show's identity is visceral, in-your-face moments. The VFX team does extraordinary work, but a huge part of what makes it land is that the practical elements are already on camera. Real pyro gives real light. Real mechanical gags give real physics. The digital artists aren't building from nothing — they're enhancing what's already there. Same deal on Reacher, where stunts and effects are in lockstep and VFX can focus on sweetening rather than creating from scratch.

Where Practical Effects Shine Brightest

CGI is brilliant at things that don't exist in the real world. Alien landscapes, creatures, cityscapes — anything with no physical reference, digital artists can build from scratch. Where practical effects earn their keep is the stuff audiences know intimately. Water. Fire. Smoke. Rain. Our brains have spent a lifetime calibrating what those look like, and they make a perfect foundation for VFX to build on.

Weather effects are a good example. We run rain rigs, snow machines, wind effects, fog. When rain is hitting an actor's jacket, pooling on the ground, catching the key light — that's thousands of interactions happening naturally. A VFX house can enhance that footage in ways that would be impossible to build from a clean plate. The practical layer does the heavy lifting; digital does the polish.

On See, we were building weather systems for outdoor scenes — dense fog through forest canopy, rain across a battlefield. The director could adjust in real time. "More fog stage left." Thirty seconds. That kind of on-set flexibility meant the VFX team received footage that was already 80% there, and they could spend their time on the 20% that actually needed to be digital.

The Budget Conversation

When you break the budget down, the practical-plus-VFX approach often comes out ahead of pure digital. A practical effect exists in camera — point any lens at it from any angle and it holds up. That means fewer VFX shots to composite, fewer clean plates to track, and less time in post. The VFX budget goes further because it's being spent on hero shots and enhancements, not on recreating basic physics.

We've had productions come to us specifically because of this math. A show needs persistent atmospheric haze through half its episodes — building that entirely in post is a massive line item. Our atmospheric rig on set? A fraction of the cost, and it gives the VFX team real volumetric light interaction to work with. Everyone wins.

The best practical effects don't replace CGI. They give the VFX team a head start — real fire, real debris, real interaction with the environment — and let digital artists enhance from a foundation that already looks right.

How the Two Work Together

The smartest productions treat practical and digital as two halves of the same pipeline. We rig a real pyro hit on set. The camera captures real light, real smoke, real debris interaction. Then the VFX team extends the fireball, adds a shockwave, paints out the rig. The final image is stronger than either approach alone because each department is doing what it does best.

We've seen this on fantasy and genre shows where there are massive digital environments and set extensions, but the physical elements — fire, breakaway walls, atmospheric fog — are practical. The VFX team can put all their energy into creatures and world-building instead of spending render time on smoke and debris that we already captured on camera. It's a more efficient pipeline for everyone.

On Resident Evil, timing was everything. A practical gag fires at exactly the right beat, and the camera captures the light, the dust, the concussion of air. The VFX team then had beautiful real-world reference to build from. When you give digital artists actual physics to match, the final composite is seamless — because it started with something real.

Why the Demand Keeps Growing

Audiences have gotten savvy. Twenty years of heavy CGI has trained people to notice when something feels synthetic, and the pendulum has swung toward hybrid approaches. Directors and showrunners are building practical effects into their budgets early because they know the final product looks better when there's a real foundation for VFX to build on.

There's the on-set efficiency angle too. When effects are happening live, every department is working from the same reference. The DP knows what the light is doing. The director sees the shot coming together in real time. And the VFX supervisor can plan enhancements from actual footage instead of guessing. We've been on sets where a director watches a gag, calls it perfect on the first take, and moves on. That certainty is worth a lot on a tight schedule.

Practical special effects aren't the old way of doing things. They're the first layer of a modern production pipeline — the foundation that makes every department's work stronger. The question was never practical vs. CGI. It's always been about knowing how they work together to put the best possible image on screen.
